Figaro Technology Case Study:
We went to the Southwest to pioneer the future of high-tech Opera.
The Santa Fe Opera - Santa Fe New Mexico USA
The legendary Intendant John Crosby saw the future in Figaro Systems. By backing this project, our first, he pioneered the trend for opera houses around the world to use subtitle screens to present titles in multiple languages. Santa Fe Opera was the first company to present titles in both English and Spanish, a move that has resulted in more ticket sales and community involvement.
This was the debut for the vacuum fluorescent system. Figaro Systems Inc. invented the hardware and software which led to future innovations still happening today.
The Santa Fe Opera is an outdoor theater, so the equipment is subject to ice and snow, wind and rain, and even lightning. Prior to opening, while testing the system, lightning struck the theatre. The elevator, the phone system and the stage lighting system were stone cold dead, even the Coke machines failed but Figaro’s Simultext® system just kept on tickin’ because we had designed the system to withstand the elements.

“Figaro's titling system has elevated our new home, the Ellie Caulkins Opera House, to a state-of-the-art theatre. Our audiences are now wonderfully spoiled and their opera-going experience is world class thanks to this feature. It's hard to imagine any new or renovated theatre without Figaro.”
— James Robinson,
Artistic Director of
Opera Colorado Maestro Ricardo Muti, "They [Figaro's seatback displays] aren’t subtitles or surtitles. Instead, the display is a modern version of the libretto. Much in the way an opera afficionado follows the opera score with a small flashlight. In addition, they are a democratic means: you can decide to keep them on or turn them off.”
